My name is William Mack Marshall (a.k.a. Mack the Knife) and I moved
from Atlantic City to Williamstown, NJ in September 1993 after retiring
from the Sands Casino.
I was a regular attendee in Holiday City's clubhouse until my left hip
was operated on in 1995.
It was long slow recovery and my wife LaVerne said I was depressed so
two of my on-shore buddies, Jim Cox (the window man) and Archie Rinaldo
(the plumber) persuaded me to sit in on shorebird carving classes with
Gary Giberson, mayor of Port Republic. For a few years we all were carving
away and painting in Tuckerton, Port Republic and other locales in Ocean
County.
A newspaper reminder to sign up for Adult Evening Classes at Williams-town
High School began my taking classes with Pat DeAngelis.

Then I joined South Jersey Wood-carvers Club and was mentored by Fred
Callahan, Ruth M. Jardine and Joe Gattuso. The carving club improved my
carving skills through seminars with Harold Enlow, Dave Sabol, and Pete
Ortel because I really like doing caricature carvings, cowboys, Indians
and animals.
I'm also interested in woodworking tools but because of rheumatoid arthritis
and numerous carving knife injuries I have become a power carver!
Thanks to all the classes, seminars and suggestions I've won a few blue
ribbons at various shows and display my work twice a year at the Public
Library in Williamstown. Carving is fun but it also makes you feel great
when someone requests some of your work for home display or as a gift.
