Hi there. Currently I am the Carvers Courier Editor for the South Jersey
Woodcarvers club, my name is LaVerne V. Marshall who moved to Gloucester
County's Holiday City at Monroe in Williamstown, NJ in 1993 with my husband
Mack (the Knife.)
My interest in trying to carve wood started with the open house Show &
Tell at the adult evening school in Washington Twp. During that visit
at the high school, power carving birds demonstrated by Ruth M. Jardine
seemed to be a great hobby. After joining South Jersey Woodcarvers club
I attended classes with Louise Wyckoff, Pat De-Angelis and Joe Gattuso
as well as seminars where I enjoyed carving realistic animals and people.
Our pet menagerie at home includes Mr. Purdy Katt, a black torn with yellow
eyes, Miss Patches, a tuxedo stray and queen of the house, plus Cutie
Pie the back-yard feral rabbit whose antics are endless.

As a Gas Company retiree who also types progress notes, depositions
and transcriptions for physicians and the medical community I find that
creating something in wood is relaxing and a good alternative use of time.
My carving of Nez Pierce Chief Joseph sits in the American Indian Museum
in Philadelphia. Needless to say I'm proud of that!
Before carving anything from start to finish you need good teachers like
Pat DeAngelis or Ruthie M. Jardine who have endless patience to guide
and advise without taking over a project thus allowing your unique expression
to be revealed. My favourite tools are anything that gets the job done
such as Stubai knives and chisels or Dremel-like power tools. The motto
is practice, practice, practice!!
